I spent part of the weekend working on a stack of older computer hardware that had been sitting on my workbench. There is something really satisfying about taking a system that will not POST, stripping it down to the bare basics, and troubleshooting component by component until it finally boots.
Usually, I start by pulling out everything except the CPU and a single stick of RAM just to see if I can get a sign of life on the screen. It is a slow, methodical process of isolating the problem, testing different connections, and checking for bad memory. Finding a simple hardware fault and getting a machine running cleanly again never gets old, especially when you know you are keeping perfectly good electronics out of the scrap pile.
