TrueNAS is fantastic at what it does—keeping data safe and managing storage—but over time, I realized my daily needs were shifting. I found myself fighting the system more than actually building what I wanted, and it became way more difficult to make everything work nicely on a higher level.

One of the biggest friction points was managing my self-hosted services. I rely heavily on platforms like Nextcloud, but it was experiencing significantly more downtime than I was comfortable with. A lot of this stemmed from constant permission issues whenever I tried sharing resources between applications. Trying to share files seamlessly across my network while still maintaining a reasonable level of security felt like a constant uphill battle.

I also realized that TrueNAS just did not fit how I wanted to handle computing. The containers felt highly restricted, making it frustrating to deploy the environments I use every day. On the flip side, trying to spin up full virtual machines for my projects ended up occupying a lot of unnecessary space. Trying to force a storage-first operating system to act like a flexible hypervisor was starting to feel like fitting a square peg into a round hole.

Moving to Proxmox gives me the freedom to experiment and allocate resources exactly how I want. It shifts the foundation to something built entirely around virtualization, which solves the container restrictions and the bloated VMs. It is a fundamental change in how I manage my setup, but getting rid of those constant permission headaches and downtime makes it the right move for the kind of hands-on problem-solving I do every day.

As I get everything settled in this new Proxmox environment, I know I will run into plenty of new quirks and learning curves. I hope to share some of the specific solutions, little scripts, and network configurations I figure out along the way right here on the blog. It is definitely a work in progress, but I am looking forward to documenting the journey and hopefully saving someone else a bit of troubleshooting time in the future.

It has been a bit of a journey lately, but I have finally decided to make the jump from TrueNAS to Proxmox.
